I know it's been ages since I wrote on this blog!
I want to write about what it means to be a fan of Torvill and Dean and also Karen Barber.
So 3 years ago, my Dad was flicking through the channels of Foxtel (Australia's cable television network) and came across the 2010 series of Dancing on Ice. We were behind England with the showing. I was drawn in straight away by it. I remember every Thursday night from then on us watching the show as a family eventually seeing Hayley Tammdon and Daniel Whiston win the series.
To me, this series is still my favourite. Foxtel showed the next series the next year and sadly in 2012 it was taken off the screens outside the UK.
That's where I really noticed I was a fan, I wrote emails to ITV and Foxtel asking why Dancing on Ice was taken off the screens here in Australia and got no real answer. I was now waking up at 5:00am, 6:00am just so I could live stream the show, I had created a fan twitter, Facebook group and this blog and was spending every spare moment researching Torvill and Dean, watching interviews, collecting articles which other fans had sent me, waiting 2 months for articles to get to Australia.
For me 3 years later, I love so much about these three skaters and I wish I could travel the miles to the UK for the last Dancing on Ice tour and/or a skate school with Karen. But I have gain so much from being a fan of these 3. Other fans keeping you company while you listen at 2:30am about a bus station, new friends from all over the world, a new skill, more confidence, a DOI family who love me so much and I love them them and hope to meet some day.
Yes these days I spend a bit less time now online searching for the latest news on Jayne, Chris and Karen and watch the interviews a bit less too. But it doesn't make me less of a fan, I'll still wake up at strange hours just to hear a five minute interview or watch a small spot on TV all from my laptop.
I now have ice skating as well and I see that as an extension of being a fan.
For me, it means it's become a part of my lifestyle and my relationships
